Commercial Helicopter Pilot Training - CPL(H)
If you want to be paid to fly helicopters you will need to obtain a commercial pilots licence which is often referred to as a CPL(H). We offer a CPL(H) modular course which can be undertaken after completing some theoretical knowledge training and exams as set by the CAA and attaining a minimum number of hours as a pilot, details of these are shown in the table below.
| Course PreRequisites |
| Age | 18 (to hold the licence) |
| Licence Held | JAA PPL (or an ICAO equivalent) |
| Minimum Flying Hours | 155 hrs |
| Theoretical Knowledge Level | CPL(H) or ATPL(H) Exams Passed |
| See LASORS 2010 Section D and JAR FCL 2 Subpart D for more details.. |
Ground School
You will be required to study the subjects you are already familiar with from the PPL(H) in greater detail, this can be achieved at home by enrolling in a self-study course at the end of which a short residential 'brush up' course is undertaken. The 'brush up' course is usually completed the week before sitting the Exams at a CAA approved location (most people opt for Gatwick). The exams are usually timetabled to be taken once per month by the CAA.
Flying Course
The flying portion of the course is split into four sections, these are
- General Handling 10hrs.
- Instrument Flying 10hrs.
- Navigation 10hrs.
- Night Flying 5hrs. Not required if already night qualified.
The flying course is best taken on an intensive basis and will take about two to three weeks to complete under normal circumstances, it is possible to take longer and several students have recently completed their training around their day jobs, some only flying once or twice per weeekend.
